OUGD406 | STUDY TASK 4 | STRUCTURING YOUR ESSAY

INTRODUCTION
The main aim of my introduction is to talk about how advertisements surround us constantly, as I will be explaining the effects they have on our society later on in my essay, it is important to set the scene.  I do not want the introduction to be too lengthy as it is only to introduce the themes I will be discussing within the document. For example I plan to:
  • Link this to the body
  • Discuss my hypothesis
  • Address the question
  • Consumerism

BODY
This is obviously my main area to discuss all the research and concepts I will be including in detail. Making points and evaluating and explaining them is important, I also want to avoid an informal discourse and try and keep this academic. Here is a rough overview of the points I will be making:
  •   Gender in art history
  •  Guerrilla Girls
  • John Berger's 'Gaze' theory
  • The gaze in modern culture
  • The effects of advertising for males
  • American Apparel

CONCLUSION
Drawing the entire discourse to an end and tying it up. I want to keep this concise and not too lengthy so it leaves a strong message.
  •  Quote by Violet Rose
  •  Revisiting points
  •  Breastfeeding

OUGD401 | STUDY TASK 3 | SUMMARISING AND REFERENCING

For this task I must create an extensive mind map about my chosen topic.

I have chosen the gender theme for this module, in which I must resolve the following question:

"To what extent does advertising construct our ideas of gender?"

During our session we were asked to create a hypothesis for our chosen questions:

"Advertising has influenced societies expectations of gender and roles through sexualisation, stereotypes and rules to adhere to to fit it's standards. Females are seen as the vain sex, there for the viewing pleasure of men. I believe that the female body is predominantly sexualised, and rejected regarding maternal or non-sexual terms. In my essay I plan to research this notion and explore this topic."
