OUGD501 / STUDY TASK 04

What is your research question?

How does advertising further perpetuate the structure of class within society?

Do you have a hypothesis?

Through research and the exploration of critical texts, I will find that advertising manipulates the class system into remaining stagnant through the use of methods and techniques within marketing and branding. Publications will be a main example such as women's magazines aimed at lower classes, of how culture can maintain the position of class through ideologies.

What are the contexts of your research interests?

To explore how publishing has an effect on consumer's culture, and status within the hierarchy of class. Researching into how design plays a part in keeping the lower classes in their position and the ideas capitalism feeds them. Why are women's magazines for lower classes presented in this way as opposed to how higher class magazines look?

Sources of primary & secondary research?

Extensive study into design decisions and language within lower class magazines.

Focus group to discover how effective my own resolutions have been.

How will your practical work relate to your written work?

Demonstrates the exploration of design in terms of appealing to the different class structures, I will be communicating that these are done very differently to attract different people. Redesigning a women's magazine aimed at a lower class and translating this into a higher class will demonstrate these differences.

What methods will you use to research, develop, create and test your work?

Research into existing magazines through purchasing multiple examples and analysing them design wise and also analysing the use of language within these publications, and how it differs from magazines which are aimed at higher classes. Research into the demographic and speak to someone who purchases these magazines and why.

Primary research will be conducted by a focus group, enabling peers to freely discuss the practical work I have produced. I will present two examples of publications, one will be with the redesigned cover, and one will be the original. Peers will be asked to discuss which are catered to low and high classes, to test if my resolutions are effective.

Timeline for work?
Essay draft will be completed before the Turn It in submission in early January.
For practical, firstly researching into the existing publications and drawing conclusions that I can apply to my own resolutions, then I will need to print these covers to be tested in crits and the focus group. After this, I will explore how I can apply these design principles further such as redesigning how the content looks, i.e an article. These resolutions do not explicitely need to be printed, I will be presenting them alongside development and research on design boards.
